Choose a dedicated page for a paper size or grid specification, or use the spacing shortcuts below to adjust this generator. The spacing is measured between adjacent grid lines.
What Is Graph Paper?
Graph paper is paper covered with evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines. The lines form square cells that provide a reference for aligning text, drawing shapes and arranging information.
The grid size describes the distance between adjacent lines. A 5mm grid has squares measuring 5 millimetres on each side; a 1cm grid has squares measuring 10 millimetres on each side.
This generator creates blank graph paper. It does not add an X/Y coordinate system or automatically plot equations. For labeled axes and coordinate numbers, use the Coordinate Graph Paper tool listed below.
How to Choose a Grid Size
Fine grids such as 1mm, 2mm and 3mm provide closely spaced reference lines for small details and compact diagrams. Check the preview and print a sample if you need to judge how clearly the lines appear on your printer.
A 5mm grid is a useful starting point for everyday math practice, sketches and notes. Choose 1cm squares when you want more room for larger writing or shapes.
For inch-based work, the generator includes 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch and 1-inch spacing. These correspond to 6.35mm, 12.7mm and 25.4mm.
You can also enter custom spacing. Choose the grid size required by your assignment or project rather than assuming that one spacing is standard for every task.
Common Uses for Graph Paper
A square grid provides a consistent reference for handwritten work. You can use it to align information, count intervals and plan a drawing before adding detail.
Common uses include:
- Practicing arithmetic and geometry
- Drawing shapes and diagrams
- Sketching layouts and simple plans
- Organizing tables and handwritten notes
- Plotting points on axes you draw yourself
- Planning drawings with a chosen scale
The grid does not assign a real-world scale to your drawing. Decide what each square represents and label the drawing accordingly.
Choose the Right Paper Size
The generator supports A3, A4, A5, B5, US Letter and US Legal, plus custom page dimensions. A4 measures 210 × 297mm; US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches.
The default layout uses A4 portrait paper, 5mm spacing and 10mm margins on all four sides. You can change the format, switch orientation and adjust margins before downloading.
Larger paper gives you more drawing space. Landscape provides a wider layout, while portrait suits many notebook-style pages. Make sure your printer supports the paper format you select.
Customize the Grid Appearance
Use the line color and line weight controls to adjust how the grid looks. Check the preview and print a sample when line visibility matters, because screen appearance and printed output can differ.
You can enable a major grid to emphasize every five squares. A 50mm calibration mark is also available as an optional printing reference.
The preview zoom controls change the on-screen view. They do not change the grid spacing or PDF page dimensions.
How to Print Graph Paper at the Correct Size
First, choose the grid spacing, paper size and orientation. Adjust margins and any available style settings, then check the preview.
Click “Download PDF” to save the generated paper. Open the PDF and select the matching paper size in your print settings.
Choose 100% or “Actual Size.” Turn off “Fit to Page” and other automatic scaling options that could change the size of the squares.
If lines are clipped near a page edge, increase the relevant margin and generate the PDF again. The generator cannot remove a printer’s physical non-printable margins.
After printing, measure the distance between adjacent grid lines. For a 5mm grid, that distance should be approximately 5mm. Printer settings and printer accuracy can affect the final result.
Graph Paper FAQ
Can I download and print graph paper for free?
Yes. You can customize graph paper, download the generated PDF and print it for free without creating an account.
How do I make A4 or Letter graph paper?
Select A4 or Letter in the paper size menu, choose your grid spacing and orientation, then download the PDF. Select the same paper size when printing.
What is the difference between 5mm and 1cm graph paper?
A 5mm grid has squares measuring 5 millimetres on each side. A 1cm grid has 10-millimetre squares, providing more space for larger writing and drawings.
Can I make quarter-inch graph paper?
Yes. Select the 1/4-inch spacing option. Each square measures 0.25 inches, or 6.35mm, on each side before any scaling during printing.
Can I customize the grid spacing and margins?
Yes. The generator includes preset and custom grid spacing, adjustable page margins, paper size and orientation controls. Check the preview before downloading.
Does this generator add coordinate axes or plot functions?
No. This tool generates a blank square grid. Use the Coordinate Graph Paper tool for X/Y axes and coordinate numbers. Neither tool automatically plots a function from an equation.
Why are the printed squares the wrong size?
Automatic print scaling can change the grid dimensions. Select the paper size used by the PDF, print at 100% or Actual Size, and turn off Fit to Page. Measure a printed interval if physical accuracy matters.
Can I change the grid color and line weight?
Yes. Use the line color and line weight controls in the generator. You can also enable a major grid. Print a sample to check visibility on your paper and printer.
